Shepherd Ogden
On Jan. 2, 2007, SafeLawns.org announced the appointment of renowned organic gardening pioneer Shepherd Ogden as executive director.
“This is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting days of my professional career,” said SafeLawns.org founder and spokesperson Paul Tukey.
Ogden, who founded the Cook’s Garden, a mailorder seed and supply house in Londonderry, Vt., in 1983, has been an author, lecturer, consultant and market gardener for most of his adult life.
His gardens and seed business were the subject of cover stories in Inc., Country Journal,
Organic Gardening, The American Gardener and the Boston Herald Sunday and featured in Time, Newsweek, Forbes, Vermont Life, Victoria, Martha Stewart Living and Garden Design magazines as well as the New York Times, Newsday, Parade and USA Today.
He has written five books: The Cook’s Garden (co-authored with Ellen Ogden); Step by Step to Organic Vegetable Gardening; Step by Step Organic Flower Gardening; The New American Kitchen Garden; and Straight Ahead Organic.
“My personal goals as Executive Director are to bring forward the obvious health, social and economic advantages of organic gardening,” said Ogden. “The chemical solutions that have been imposed on – sold to – American homeowners over the past 50 years are so clearly antithetical to actual needs of American families, and so clearly cash-beneficial to the companies that have spent millions of advertising dollars to persuade us we need their solutions.’ Once we are able to speak directly to American families through SafeLawns.org, I have no doubt that people will realize that they have been sold a poisoned bill of goods.”
