My Fall 2007 Trip to Neptune's Harvest
Late last fall I took a trip to visit the Neptunes Harvest operation. I was invited by Ann Molloy, Sales Manager/family member of the operation. I had heard so much about their company and products from others in the Organic Industry. I knew these products were widely distributed and used by people in all kinds of soil care, and I was looking forward to visiting and getting to know the company better.
The products are especially loved by the champion pumpkin growers, who onto themselves are a very special and finicky crowd. They take their pumpkin growing very very seriously, competing for size and only using what works. Neptunes Harvest is a favorite. The 2007 Champion World Record 1689 lb.Pumpkin was grown with Neptunes Harvest.
I decided to bring my father along on this visit. He is from Pennslyvannia and was up North visiting my sister and I for a couple of weeks. I thought he would like to see the boats and the operation so I invited him along. This day would turn out to be one of the finest we have ever spent together, seriously.
We headed to Gloucester on a perfect blue skied morning. I didn't know anything about Gloucester's History except that it is America's Oldest Seaport first visited in 1606. One of the very many interesting facts about Gloucester is that over 5,000 Gloucestermen have been lost at sea trying to earn a living and feed the world. It is not an easy lifestyle for anyone.
Ann and her family are these very special people who do this hard work. They are a classic fishing family. They are just like the people protrayed in A Perfect Storm. The movie was actually filmed right on the docks where their Company is located.
Ann grew up with her brothers catching and prepping the fish for wholesale to stores and restaurants. Their father started Ocean Crest Seafoods in 1965 as a wholesale fish and seafood company. Later the Neptunes Harvest division would come in the 1980's. They wanted to produce something good for the soil with the excess fish parts, knowing that fish fertilizer is the some of the best fertilizer there is. With the help of some notable experts they would develop a process that would use all of the fish, wasting nothing. They use a unique cold process that protects the vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and growth hormones.
Ann is AWESOME, that really sums her up. She is warm, friendly, relaxed and generous. She is also a concerned mother seriously committed to doing this work in producing some of he best organic fish fertilizers in the world. My father loved Ann, he continues to talk about her whenever we talk. "Ann is the real deal honey" he says. My father doesn't like anyone......so that says alot right there.
The very first thing that hits you while touring the company is the smell. "The smell of money." This is what Ann's father told her while she was growing up. It is actually fish, strong and unmistakable. You immediately realize that you have stepped into a world that is set apart from the rest. The people that live and work here belong here. They are different and they know it, they are proud and happy to do their work, luckily for the rest of us, because this is not a lifestyle that most of us could handle. It is an efficient and strong operation. Every part of the building on the dock is used for some aspect of the business. Even the building alongside it is used for icing the fish.
After the tour Ann invited us to lunch in her Uncle's restaurant. This is one of the best fish restaurants,in Gloucester, probably in the country. We met her Uncle, the most decorated WW11 veteran I have ever met. He is also very warm and friendly, relaxed and generous. Just like Ann.
After lunch Ann treated us to a whale watching tour on one of the boats parked outside her Uncle's restaurant. Gloucester is visited by thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It is especially known for its whale watching. This is an area where the whales will stay and eat for several months before heading south to the warmer waters to mate and have their babies. We saw alot of whales and learned some fascinating things about them also.
Male whales make up songs every year when they go south to look for mates. They even steal verses from each others songs and add them to their own songs. They woo the females with these songs, mate and then re-write their songs the next year. I had no idea that a whale song is real. I thought it was just a cute saying. They showed off perfectly for us for over 3 hours and then we headed back.
Like I said this was a perfect day. Spending time with the whales was a perfect ending to a perfect day visiting Ann and her families company. I am very honored to represent this company and its products. This is a strong and stable company, with an even stronger future. Ann and her brothers know what they are doing, and they are doing it well. Whether you get their products from them or a store or me, you are making a smart choice and you will not be disappointed. Like their father before them they will most likely pass this onto their future generations.
The pictures speak a thousand words so enjoy and know "this is the real deal honey"
