 The biggest investment in your landscape, in both time and money, is the selection, purchase, and planting of trees. Trees dominate the landscape and have a psychological benefit, too, by making you feel rested and peaceful.
By horticultural definition, trees are woody plants with one main stem or trunk, although some, such as river birch or smoke tree are often grown in multitrunked clumps.Trees generally have a mature height ranging from 15 to 100 feet or more. A small tree is defined as one that generally doesn't exceed 25 to 35feet in a mature height. A medium sized tree matures at 50 to 60 feet and a large tree  matures at 75 to 100 feet or taller. Growing conditions, climate, competition with grass and other plants, mechanical or animal damage, and pollution can prevent a tree from reaching its mature height.
Trees serve as backdrops for other plants or garden features and focal points, like large, living sculptures. You can use them to screen unwanted views and give you privacy. Your trees can establish the walls and ceilings for your outdoor rooms. You can use trees to shade your house, keeping things cool, blocking the sun for summer shade. You can also use them as windbreak.
Trees absorb noise and reduce glare, and they purify the air that you breathe. Many trees have edible fruit for your family. All trees have valuable medicinal qualities. Dead trees make wonderful homes for so many of our woodland creatures.
 Trees are by far my favorite plant in the plant kingdom, if such a thing could be said. I love them, and I know many people that do. I have friends that have devoted their lives to protecting them and studying them, and others that are experts in caring for them. I will bring as many of them to this site as possible. We need to care more about our trees and the challenges they are facing now. So many species are dying or are very sick. There is alot we can do to reverse this crisis, but we must inform ourselves and act now, we can start by caring for our own trees right in our backyards and neighborhoods.
